Eco Friendly Degreaser Concentrate – COBRA
Company 6 is an equipment rental company, specializing in large construction equipment. Their process includes cleaning of returned equipment as well as routine maintenance and repair. Company 6 was looking to increase their eco-safety profile and lower costs for their process. They found us via referral and asked us to build an eco friendly degreaser concentrate.
Beginning with the Needs Analysis, we created a priority list of their objectives:
- High performance
- Good eco-safety profile
- Low VOC
- Low Cost
Starting with an existing degreaser base formulation, we adapted “Green” ingredients as much as possible. Testing for performance, we found that we were not able to make a true 100% Green product that would perform to their standards. But it was completely eco-friendly as far as biodegradability, low VOC (met CARB Rule 1171) and overall safety when diluted.
Field testing was spray-and-wipe cleaning and pressure washing of Bulldozers and Lift equipment. It was also tested as a concrete floor cleaner for grime and oil spots.
Demonstrations worked as well as it had in our lab studies, and surpassed the performance of their previous product (according to workers). Success!
Overall by using our eco friendly degreaser, Company 6 was able to lower costs about 25% versus their previous degreaser. It also brought the eco-friendly aspect that there were looking for with biodegradable ingredients, low VOCs (CARB Rule 1171 exempt) and low hazard rating improving worker safety compared to the caustic cleaner they used before.
This project was interesting in that we found that we couldn’t build a 100% Green product that would outperform their current product. Although all of the ingredients are considered eco-safe, the pH aspect of our concentrate (12.2 pH) disqualifies it as a 100% Green product.
Overall Company 6 was satisfied with our eco friendly degreaser concentrate. They saved about $5,500 per year at their primary location. SCAQMD VOC emissions reporting was no longer so stringent since they were using a CARB Rule 1171 exempt cleaner.
