Case Study 3: Eco-friendly Coating Stripper
Posted on March 2, 2015
Company 3 is a business which deals in wood coatings and treatments for homes which utilize wood. The wood requires treatment for appearance and long term durability, starting with a cleaning and application of a protective layer of polymer to shield it against the environment, as well as provide a carrier for color tint to enhance appearance. As the coatings age, they require removal and reapplication to provide their maximum visual impact.
Company 3 was contacted during a survey of companies in their area by one of our representatives, and indicated they were looking for an eco-friendly way to remove their polymer coatings, as well as treat the wood surfaces underneath prior to reapplication of their coatings in a process known as “blonding”.
Beginning with the Needs Analysis, we created a priority list of their objectives:
- Fast acting
- Reasonable pricing (for resale and distribution)
- Compatible with their polymer coating process
- High viscosity (to promote adhesion to vertical surfaces)
Achieving these goals was not technically difficult fortunately, as we had experience in related fields.
We started with the coating stripper formulation. Utilizing an existing formulation for the janitorial industry, we adapted the components in order to increase viscosity, decrease cost, and provide a concentration sufficient for light dilution.
Following this, we developed a formula from scratch for the wood blonding. Using our knowledge of brightening fabrics and metals, we applied these techniques to the wood surfaces this product would be encountering.
Upon field testing, both products worked great. Positive reviews were given regarding performance, cost, and eco-safety. The viscosity was reported to be too low however, so a formulation adjustment was in order to increase thickness, preventing the products from running down the sides of walls too quickly. Overall, the project was a success, and has since been working great.
Although these products are not Green, they are built with eco-friendly ingredients. We are still striving to develop a product that is not only Green, but will also replace both of those formulations with a single product. Company 3 has since sold a good number of units utilizing these formulas, and looks forward to a Greener future with us.
